This case study created from a pair of outdoor equipment vendors that ship high volumes of relatively large, heavy, dense packages. In these examples, FedEx is often a more attractive option—and it’s important to note that the 2016 FedEx pricing shown is probably based on negotiated rates which we did not have access to for our analysis. As noted, the vendors may have some significant opportunities to reduce costs by optimizing their packaging to allow use of USPS Flat Rate or Regional Rate containers.

Based on this chart, shipping costs will be going up almost completely across the board for our vendors. On some order types they stand to save some money on shipping by utilizing Priority Mail Regional Rate boxes, however this is only for unique cases where the items will fit in the box and don’t have to travel far.
