Labor Day Email Campaign Ideas for eCommerce
By Rob Zaleski, Aug 22, 2017

After a strong retail showing in July (and August not looking too shabby), it’s time to usher in Labor Day weekend plans. Of course, in the world of retail and eCommerce, that means Labor Day weekend sales. You need to capture the attention of customers, and the best place to do that is the email inbox. Do you have an email marketing solution in place? Let’s talk about some Labor Day email campaign ideas for eCommerce sellers!

Made In America sale

Before all the cookouts and end-of-summer waterpark vacations, Labor Day was actually meant to celebrate the American labor movement and the contributions that workers have made to the strength, prosperity, laws and well-being of the country. So, celebrate the red, white, and blue!

This can be a great time to promote handmade or locally-sourced products or the fact that you’re a locally-owned small or medium-sized business. Use this as an opportunity to spotlight your business’s place in the community or any involvement you or your products have. Telling the story of how you’re locally connected can be particularly resonant with customers on this holiday and may be able to earn you a bit of loyalty before the busy holiday season hits.

End of Summer Clearance

The “out with the old and in with the new” inventory change is a perfect occasion to offer sales and discounts on customer favorites you’ll no longer be stocking. Segment your customer list based on SKUs purchased and target people who’ve purchased the ones you won’t be carrying any longer. You can either offer a previously-purchased discount or a simple restock reminder—or mention that if they loved it so much, now is the time to grab it as a gift for a friend or family member. The key to this campaign is scarcity and urgency.

The season change is also a great opportunity to nudge people who haven’t purchased from you in a while and reactivate them before holiday season hits. Segment your list to those who haven’t purchased something in the last 90 days, and create a special promotion just for them.

Tease upcoming holiday sales or items

Labor Day generally marks the end of summer (though here in Texas, it certainly doesn’t feel like it!). With an eye toward fourth quarter holidays, it doesn’t hurt to start hinting at what your customers could be looking forward to.

Try giving subscribers a sneak peek to make them feel like they’ve got an insider’s edge over other customers. Or start collecting responses from them about what they’re most interested in buying as gifts for this upcoming season. Though Thanksgiving weekend and Christmas often steal the show, there is plenty of opportunity to participate in Halloween, which is expected to be the largest-ever for retail sales. And the shipping season for Halloween starts sooner than you may think!
